Mhairi Black MP officially launched Pride Glasgow, Scotland’s largest Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Festival highly anticipated volunteer programme Pride Life at an event hosted by Volunteer Glasgow on Friday 5th February.
Pride Life is an engaging volunteer programme which is designed to engage volunteers year round through a range of activities, training and workshops designed to build confidence, improve skills and promote team work with an overall aim of providing volunteers for the weekend long festival held annually in August.
Trialed in 2015 activities in the Pride Life programme have already included paintballing, outdoor photography, escape rooms, drug, alcohol and legal high awareness training and laughter therapy.
Volunteers are known as Pride Ambassadors with roles available in Event Stewarding, Box Office Operations and Artist Liaison amongst others. To ensure a successful volunteer effort at the festival all volunteers will participate in a structured induction process and will go through a peer education programme designed to educate volunteers on issues that affect the LGBTI community and actively encourage them to share this knowledge with their peers.
During the event volunteers of Pride Glasgow presented Ms Black with an invitation to lead the Pride Glasgow Parade as Chief Marshall.
Speaking during the event the MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire South highlighted the personal benefits of volunteering saying “The relationships you build during volunteering are important and long lasting. I still have contact and go to social events with people i volunteered with 8 years ago”.
